Union Jack Dresser

my union jack finished my union jack 3
Inspired by Miss Mustard Seed’s creation, I decided to try painting a Union Jack design on a dresser I found while on vacation (free).  Yes!  I pilfered this dresser while on vacation in Seagrove, FL.  Our next door neighbors were moving out and left tons of goodies for the trash man.  I asked permission of course and then recruited my friends to help walk it over to our porch.  We used it as a beach towel rack while we were there.  The rental folks and our other neighbor even stopped by because they thought we were taking it from the house!  What a laugh we all had.

This was our rental house in Seagrove Beach.  Highly recommend it!  Quietude House by Garrett Realty.  This pic below was also the inspiration for my Union Jack dresser.  I love the gold leaf trim.  This Union Jack dresser is listed for sale on Etsy for only $2,995...so if you're in the DC area, it's available for pickup!

It was a little challenging because my dresser was a little curvy.  The lines aren’t perfect, but I wanted it to look vintage and distressed.  What do you think?  I taped off the design (eye-balling it and using a yard stick – because i don’t have a projector).  I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint – Aubusson Blue and Emperor’s Silk (which i mixed with a little Graphite).  I left the white spaces unpainted (the original color of the dresser).  I added a little gold leafing around the edges, then waxed with clear and dark.  I sanded it a little around the edges, but wished I hadn’t afterwards.  It looked great as it was.  I still have to add the knobs – i can’t decide if i want to spray them gold or put gold leafing on them.

The above pics were the prepping before the paint (taping the design only – no other prep work on the dresser it self – that’s the perks of chalk paint!), and then before the gold leafing and waxes.  And yes, I paint in my kitchen…my friends tease me all the time.

The finished Union Jack with hardware!! YAY!!

It was fun and took me about two 1/2 days to complete, while I was stuck at home sick with an upper respiratory infection.
Thanks for checking out my blog!

  14. This may be my favorite Union Jack dresser that I've seen ... makes sense on this one, because the center drawer already had molding that perfectly makes it the horizontal stripe! Great colors, too!!
